Many people use WD-40 as penetrating spray, when technically I don't think it is. At least not as much as it is a 'lubricating spray'.
What is your go to spray for getting those encrusted bolts out?
Mine is PB Blaster, the only time it has not worked was when I needed heat.

Aero-Kroil, but 90% of the time straight ATF is superior to anything else. WD40 is NOT penetrating oil. Nor is it good for much in the long run

I use WD-40 to disperse moisture, and to lube something if I don't have any Tri-Flow.
Lithium grease whenever I can.
PB blaster to penetrate.

Penetrating spray? **Giggle**
PB Blaster for the win! All the best properties of WD-40 without the drying out or annoying residue. And, it's just better anyway...

I did get some of the wd-40 specialist penetrating oil recently because it was on sale. It worked at least as good as PB blaster, if not better, without smelling as bad. I usually use PB blaster, then heat if I need it. If it's my jeep though, a lot of the time, I resign myself to just breaking bolts.

Zep 45 is my favorite. Don't need penetrating oil somuch in Oregon, but in Minnesota this was all I used.

Liquid wrench or PB Blaster here, I don't have much preference so it's whatever one is in stock and cheaper at the hardware store since they seem to work about the same in my experience.

K&W Knock'er Loose.
When I was a kid, my dad dragged home a 1960 F100 as a project for us to work on. It had been sitting in the woods for 20 years - long enough to sink in until the frame was sitting on the dirt. The lugnuts were balls of rust.
Dad parked it in the sun, and sprayed the lugnuts on the sunny side with Knock'er Loose. After a half-hour, Dad was able to go out to the truck with a 1/2" breaker bar and take the lugnuts off by hand. Once the wheel was off, he was able to take the brake drums off with zero effort.
The Knock'er Loose had worked on the lugnuts (making them actual lugnuts instead of rustballs), worked down the studs, and around the entire brake drums.
That's why I only use Knock'er Loose.

I haven't used it yet but my customers come in and buy it by the case and swear by it. And from a quick google search the reviews seem plenty positive. I would say Kano Kroil is the best stuff on the market.

If PB blaster doesn't work you need a torch. WD-40 is nothing and shouldn't come near a car for any purpose. It's really a whole bunch of cleaners that evaporate and a teeny bit of lubricant. If you think you need WD-40 I will tell you that you really want silicone spray, white lithium grease or PB blaster depending what you are trying to do. WD-40 is nice to have around the house where things tend to operate dry most of the time, but it should not be in the garage, period.

PB Blaster, but do it for a few days early if you have a Jeep. If PB blaster doesn't work, you need it to glow orange...

Either PB or the GM rust penetrant. It has graphite in it so once you crack something loose, it won't bind up again.

SiliKroil. Stuff is amazing at loosening old bolts. The can I had said "for industrial use only, not for home" on it. Boss.

I use PB, it's always worked for me. I've used WD-40 a few times when it was all I had, it's better than nothing in a pinch. It's not really what it's meant for, thought. It's really more of a cleaning agent than lube.

I have had this discussion sooo many times. WD-40 is not a lubricant. Please don't put it on anything that needs lube unless you're planning to properly lube it afterwards.

But it's not a very good penetrant either. It's more of a cleaning agent.

Digging around in an old bar, I found a can of liquid wrench and a rusted/seized pair of pliers. I didn't think they ever had a chance of working again (like buried in the dirt for 20 years), but figured what the hell. Whatever the old liquid wrench formula was, it worked beautifully, and now the pliers do as well. I haven't found the new liquid wrench to work near as well though. I have heard a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone was better than almost anything you can buy, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

Haha, that's exactly what I said in another comment. Like many things that claim multiple purposes, it doesn't do most of them very well. Especially when the claims are made by consumers, rather than the manufacturer.

Also, a lot of people don't know that WD40 is hydroscopic and can actually increase rust.

a lot of people don't know what hydroscopic is.
I looked it up for... yea for those people.
Hygroscopy is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from the surrounding environment .

I'll add another vote for the SiliKroil / AeroKroil products. SiliKroil is the only thing we use at work for a penetrating oil and if that doesn't loosen stuff up it is because the blue wrench is needed.
